American Airlines gift card: fly for less, or sell it for cash
Updated September 23, 2026 · Reviewed by Kirill Novikov, FlipGift founder
American Airlines gift cards pay on aa.com for flights operated by American and American Eagle, for any passenger, and AA allows up to eight gift cards on one purchase — useful when a seller holds several small ones. The seller books your itinerary in your exact name with date of birth and gender, sets your email and phone as the reservation contact, and pays with the card. The confirmation and receipt go to that email.
Verifying an American Airlines booking made for you
On aa.com choose Find your trip and enter the record locator with your first and last name. A ticketed reservation shows a ticket number (starting 001) and "Ticketed" on the receipt; a mere hold does not. Check that the passenger name matches your ID letter for letter.
Cancellation, and why the payout waits for the trip
American refunds any ticket within 24 hours of booking and, outside Basic Economy, lets a fare be cancelled later for a trip credit — both back to the buyer of the ticket, which is the seller. The hold on the seller's payout until the day after departure is what makes that safe for you.
What an American Airlines gift card is worth here
American Airlines gift cards list here at roughly 8–15% off. Typical bookings: a Main Cabin round trip, a one-way through DFW or CLT, a Main Cabin Extra seat priced on aa.com. Fares and rooms reprice by the hour: up to 5% over the total you saw is the seller's to absorb, more comes back to you to approve. The fee mechanics — 2.5% platform fee, how the discount is matched — are on the travel hub.
Booking American Airlines for less
Price the fare on American Airlines's site and post it on the booking form with every passenger exactly as on ID — date of birth and gender included, the airline cannot ticket without them — the route, the dates and the total. A seller with the card accepts within the hour of opening it and books within two; you pay from your FlipGift balance when they accept, look the ticket up under your name, and the seller is paid the day after you fly.
Selling an American Airlines gift card
AA gift cards never expire. Rather than selling the card itself for 70 cents on the dollar, list the balance here: you book a buyer's aa.com fare with it, in their name, and receive cash minus your discount once they have flown. A paid request gives you an hour from opening it to accept and two to book; the payout waits until the day after the passenger flies, and cancelling a ticket you booked for a buyer ends an account here.
