Backcountry Gift Card Balance — Four Sites, One Card

A Backcountry gift card is not limited to Backcountry: it also spends at CompetitiveCyclist.com, SteepandCheap.com and MotoSport.com. That widens what an "unwanted" card can buy considerably.

One card, four storefronts

Backcountry gift cards are redeemable on Backcountry.com, CompetitiveCyclist.com, SteepandCheap.com and MotoSport.com. Those are four quite different shops under one roof: general outdoor gear, road and mountain cycling, the deal-driven clearance site, and powersports.

That matters for a card you were not sure you wanted. A card given for hiking gear also buys a bike component, a helmet, or whatever SteepandCheap has marked down this week — and the clearance site in particular is where a fixed balance goes furthest.

Checking the balance

Enter the card number and PIN on the gift card balance page (linked above), or:

  • call 1-800-409-4502;
  • read the balance from a recent receipt or invoice, where the remaining amount is printed after each purchase.

Where the numbers are

On a physical card the number is printed with the PIN beside or beneath it; on a digital card both are in the delivery email. Copy from the email rather than retyping, since these numbers are long enough for a transposition to look like an invalid card.

Gear seasons run in opposite directions

The four sites peak at different times of year — snow gear in autumn, cycling in spring, powersports in summer. A card that seems badly timed for one is well timed for another, which is a reason to check the balance and look sideways rather than let it wait for next winter.

When the lookup fails

Confirm you are entering the gift card number rather than an order reference. Allow a newly bought card time to activate. If the card is physical and the print has worn, the phone line can read it from the number you can still make out plus the purchase details.

Zero on a card you have not spent

Because the card spans four sites, check order history on all of them rather than only Backcountry — a purchase at Competitive Cyclist draws on the same balance and will not appear in a Backcountry account.

If none of the four is your shop

Outdoor gear is specific to a sport and a season. If the card is not going to be used, you can sell the balance through FlipGift escrow while keeping the card: a buyer's payment is locked in escrow, you place their order with your own card, and escrow releases your cash on confirmed delivery. A flat 2.5% fee is split between both sides, and sellers typically keep 72–88% of face value.
