Configure-to-order changes the maths

HP's store sells configurable machines: the same laptop model spans several hundred dollars depending on memory, storage and warranty. A gift card is therefore rarely the whole payment and often decides the specification — a $200 card is the difference between 16GB and 32GB rather than between buying and not buying. Promotions and gift cards are not the same instrument

If the machine is not being bought

Hardware plans change, and a card for a machine you decided against is money standing still.
