What the card actually covers

RH — the company formerly trading as Restoration Hardware — states that its gift cards are redeemable for all RH products, at RH Restaurants, and to purchase membership in the RH Members Program. Recipients can redeem online, in galleries, or by phone.

That third one is worth pausing on. RH membership carries the discount that makes the furniture prices make sense, so a gift card that buys the membership changes the arithmetic of everything bought afterwards. A card too small for a sofa is not too small for the thing that discounts the sofa.

Checking the balance

Open the RH gift card balance page (linked above) and enter the card number from the front and, in most cases, the PIN or security code from the back. You can also:

• call 800-762-1005;
• ask at the desk in any RH gallery.

Baby & Child and Guesthouse have their own pages

RH runs separate balance pages for RH Baby & Child and RH Guesthouse. If your card came from one of those, use its own lookup rather than assuming the main one covers it — a valid card checked on the wrong page reads as invalid.

Galleries, not shops

RH sells through large galleries rather than conventional stores, and stock is generally ordered rather than carried. That makes the balance a planning number: you are specifying a piece with a designer, and the card is one line in a quote that will also carry delivery and, often, a lead time measured in weeks.

If the form refuses the card

Confirm you are on the right brand's page. Check the number from the front and the PIN from the back. Allow a newly purchased card time to activate, and enter by hand rather than pasting.

Zero on a card you have not used

One chair does it here. Check the order it might have gone against, then keep the purchase receipt — it is what customer service traces if the card should genuinely be untouched.

Design taste is specific and a card can outlast the project.
